What goes on a pub specials poster
- 1One special a day
- A pub week is a row of days, each with one plate or one drink: burgers on Monday, wings midweek, fish on Friday, a roast on Sunday. Add a special for each day you run one and leave out the days you do not. A day with nothing on is not a gap; it is just not there.
- 2Tap the day
- Under each special, press Change the days and tap its day. The poster writes the day in words over the dish, and in the Menu board look in navy each day gets a tab of its own colour. Two days tapped are written as a pair, and a run as "Mon to Thu".
- 3The price, or the deal in words
- The price box takes an amount, or a deal in your own words: a percentage off, two for the price of one, kids eat free. Words are drawn whole and never cut, on a badge or line sized to them.
- 4Happy hour and the hours it runs
- A special has days but no hours of its own. Put the time in the name, "Draught, 4 to 6", or use the box for the words at the top (under All options) for "Happy hour 4 to 6". Say only the hours you will keep.
- 5Drinks on a poster
- If the poster carries alcohol, many bars add a line that it is not for sale to persons under 18. The maker does not add one for you and gives no legal advice: if you want the line, type it in the box for where you are and when you are open.
- 6Sit down only, and the kitchen hours
- The same box takes conditions in a few words: "Sit down only", "While stocks last", "Kitchen open 12 to 9". It holds two rows, so choose the one or two that matter.
- 7A quiz, a match or live music
- An event is its own poster. Type the event as the special, the date in the box for the words at the top, and a cover charge or "Free entry" as the price. Save it as a separate picture and keep the week poster as it is.
- 8Where it goes
- Post the tall picture on Status at the start of the week. Print A4 for the door and the wall by the bar, and A5 to stand on each table.
Pub specials poster design ideas
Six ways one week of pub specials can look: two painted boards, a chalkboard, a dark card and two loud ones for the window. Tap a picture to start from it.
- Menu board in navy and amber, tall shape
- The week as a board: navy with an amber line round the edge, each day on a tab of its own colour and each price in amber on the right. Each day can be told from the next by its colour.
- Blue chalkboard, square
- A chalkboard with ringed prices, the board by the door of a pub. On a square it is ready for a post.
- Dark and serif look in slate and silver, tall shape
- Dark slate with serif names and silver figures is the calm one, for a bar that lists drinks and plates more than it shouts a deal.
- Menu board in bottle green, A4 to print
- Bottle green with gold, the colours of an old pub sign, on A4 for the wall by the bar. Here every day has the same gold tab.
- Kasi look in blue, A4 to print
- Kasi gives each day a tilted white label and each price an orange tag. It is the loud one for a window.
- Big headline look in blue, tall shape
- Big headline shouts the words at the top. Change the box for the words at the top (under All options) to "Happy hour" or "Quiz night" and that is what fills the block.
A week of pub specials, step by step
The poster comes from five specials, each with one day tapped: any burger and chips on Monday, two tacos on Tuesday, a pizza and a soft drink on Wednesday, fish and chips on Friday and a roast on Sunday. Thursday and Saturday have no special, so they are not on the poster. The foot says the specials are for sitting down and gives the kitchen hours.
Tips
- Keep each dish to three or four words, so the day, the dish and the price fit on one row.
- Five or six specials fill the tall shape. Eight is the most it holds, and a square holds five.
- If a deal needs a condition, put the condition at the foot, not in the dish name.
- Use the same poster every week and change only the line that changes.
- Take last week's picture off Status when the new one goes up.
Sizes and printing
- Tall, for WhatsApp Status
- Tall like a phone screen. Best for WhatsApp Status and for Stories.
- Square, for a post
- Square. Best for a post on Facebook or Instagram.
- Printer page (A4)
- A4 is the size of a normal printer page. Print it at home or at a print shop. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
- Half page (A5)
- A5 is half of a normal printer page. Good for a counter. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
Questions
- Can each day of the week have its own special?
- Yes, up to eight specials on the tall shape or a print, and five on a square. Add one special for each day and tap that day under it.
- Can I show the hours of a happy hour?
- A special has days but no time box. Type the hours in the name of the special, or in the box for the words at the top (under All options).
- Does the maker add an under-18 line to a drinks poster?
- No. It adds nothing you did not type. If you want such a line, type it in the box for where you are and when you are open. This is not legal advice.
- Can the price be "2 for 1" or "half price"?
- Yes. The price box takes words as well as an amount, and the words are drawn whole.
- Can I choose the colour of each day's tab?
- No. In the navy colours of the Menu board look each day of the week has a fixed colour. In its other colours every day has the same tab.
