What goes on a daily specials menu
- 1One special for each day
- Each weekday gets one special, from Monday to Friday, so the menu reads down the week. Type the dish, tap the day it is on, then add the next special.
- 2Weekly specials and daily ones
- Weekly specials are the deals that run all week. A daily special changes each day, so keep the two apart: the poster carries the week, and this menu carries each day.
- 3Name the dish, not the day
- Type the dish as you would say it at the counter, such as "Chicken wrap". Put the day in the tap boxes, not in the name, so the name stays the same if you change the day.
- 4Prices typed the same way
- Type each price as a whole number, such as 75, in its own box. The same format on every line keeps the prices easy to compare.
- 5A new picture each week
- Make a new picture when the week changes, and take the old one down from WhatsApp Status and the counter. An old day left on the wall would show a special that has already gone.
- 6Hours and how to order
- Use the note for the hours and for how to order. It takes 60 letters, so keep it short.
- 7Monday to Friday is five lines
- Each weekday is one line, so five specials fill the picture. Leave out a day with no special, and the picture still reads clearly from the top.
- 8Same price all week
- If a dish keeps its price every day, say so in the note, such as "Same price all week". A changed price belongs on the new picture, not crossed out on the old one.
- 9Check the day tags first
- Each special shows its day on a tag, so a diner reads the week from top to bottom. Check the Monday tag first, then work down to Friday before you save the picture.
Daily specials menu design ideas
Six ways a week of daily specials can look: an orange headline, a teal headline, a navy bold card, a red bold card, a navy braai board and a charcoal stripes card. Choose the one nearest your counter, then type each day over the example.
- Big headline look in orange, tall shape
- A large headline in orange sets the week at the top, with one special for each weekday under it. Tall for Status.
- Big headline look in teal, A4 to print
- The same headline in teal, printed on A4 for the counter.
- Bold look in navy, tall shape
- Bold lettering on navy, one special for each day in a tall picture for Status.
- Bold look in red, square
- Bold in red for a cafe that wants its specials to be seen first. Sized for a post on Facebook or Instagram.
- Braai look in navy, square
- The Braai look in navy, with its checker edge and lime price badges, for a cafe that also grills.
- Stripes look in charcoal, A5
- Stripes in charcoal, the quietest of the stripes. On A5 it fits a counter.
A daily specials menu, step by step
The example has five specials, one for each weekday: a bacon and egg roll on Monday, a chicken wrap on Tuesday, a beef pie and gravy on Wednesday, fish and chips on Thursday and a toasted sandwich and soup on Friday. Type each one, then tap its day. Add another special for the next line. The note at the foot gives the hours, so the counter knows when each special is served.
Tips
- One dish for each day, at a price you can keep to.
- Check the day tags before you save the picture.
- Put the hours in the note at the foot.
- Take last week's picture down before you post the new one.
- Keep the same look all week, so people know the menu at a glance.
Sizes and printing
- Tall, for WhatsApp Status
- Tall like a phone screen. Best for WhatsApp Status and for Stories.
- Square, for a post
- Square. Best for a post on Facebook or Instagram.
- Printer page (A4)
- A4 is the size of a normal printer page. Print it at home or at a print shop. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
- Half page (A5)
- A5 is half of a normal printer page. Good for a counter. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
Questions
- Can I leave a day with no special?
- Yes. Add a special only for the days you have one, and leave the other days out of the list.
