Gatsby menu maker: half and full prices

A gatsby is sold by its size, so this menu puts a Half and a Full price beside every one. It opens in the Takeaway sign look: red and yellow, heavy capitals, the two price columns in yellow.

See how it works

What you type stays on your phone. We only see it if you press "Send these to us on WhatsApp" or "Send them by email form" further down. It is kept on this phone, so it is here when you come back.

How it works

  1. Type your shop and your gatsbys.

Example. A phone showing the step "What do you sell?" for Riyaad's Gatsby Corner: a line and its price being typed, and the menu beside them with the lines typed so far.
  2. Pick how it looks.

Example. A phone showing the step "Pick how it looks": the menu for Riyaad's Gatsby Corner on the left and the same words in other looks on the right, one of them chosen.
  3. Change the colours, if you like.

Example. A phone showing the same step with "More colours" open and another colour chosen: the menu for Riyaad's Gatsby Corner is in that colour.
  4. Share it on WhatsApp, or print it.

Example. The finished menu for Riyaad's Gatsby Corner filling a phone screen, and the same picture printed on a page stuck to a wall.

The pictures show examples with made-up places and prices.

Run a weekly deal? Put it on a free page people can open.

Listing is free. Nothing goes on the page until you have checked it and published it.

We put weekly deals on a page, not whole menus: a special with its price and the days it runs. If you run one, you can send it to us, and where we can check the place is yours we set it up for you to check and publish.

To make sure it is really your place, we set it up with the email address your place shows publicly, on its website, Google or Facebook. If it shows no email, we phone the number it lists and ask you to confirm by email. A phone call alone is not enough. So we can only set up a page when we can check the place is yours from something it already shows publicly. If your place has nothing online yet, we cannot set one up from here, and the poster maker stays free to use. If you message us on WhatsApp, message from the number your place shows publicly.

Add your place name and an item to send them to us.

WhatsApp opens with your message ready, and the form opens filled in. Nothing is sent until you press send. See an example page

You get a picture to post, and a bigger one to print on a normal printer page (A4) or half a page (A5), not a Word file. Free, no account, and nothing is uploaded: the picture is made on your device.

What goes on a gatsby menu

1The size is the price
A gatsby is a long roll filled with slap chips and a filling, made to share. Shops sell it by size, most often Half and Full, and some say Midi and Mega or Medium and Large. Use the two words your own customers say, and keep them in the same order all the way down.
2Half and Full as two columns
Under All options, tick "Two prices on each line, like Small and Large" for your Gatsbys section and name the two prices Half and Full, or the words you use. Each gatsby then needs only its name and its two prices, and the picture draws Half and Full above the columns.
3A quarter as well
A line holds two prices, not three. If you also sell a quarter, give the quarters a section of their own with one price each, or add "quarter" to the name on a line of its own. Say so plainly: a customer should not have to guess which price is which.
4From the plain one to the loaded one
Start with the chips gatsby, then polony and Vienna, then Russian, chicken and the steak ones, so the prices climb as the eye goes down. Masala steak, chicken, calamari or a full house: write the fillings the way your board does.
5The free drink
Many gatsby shops give a small cold drink with a full gatsby, or a big one with two. The form has no box for an offer on a menu, so put it in the box for where you are and when you are open, as the example does. Write only what you will hand over every time.
6Days and hours
The same box holds your trading days and hours, in the words you use on the door. It is drawn at the foot of the menu, above your phone number, on up to two lines.
7A gatsby special on its own poster
For a Tuesday gatsby special, open All options and choose Specials at the top and type the gatsby, its price and the day. One special is drawn as a poster, with the name and the price as its biggest things.
8The photo
A gatsby cut in half and laid open, shot from above in daylight, shows the filling. The maker takes one photo and frames it under your name. It stays on your device.

Gatsby menu design ideas

Six ways one gatsby menu can look. The first is a loud window sign and the second a black and gold board, the two kinds of gatsby menu this page was drawn from. Tap one to start from it.

Takeaway sign look, tall shape
Takeaway sign is the loud flat colour of a Cape takeaway window. A script word sits over heavy white capitals, and the Half and Full columns are yellow, so the two sizes are the first thing read after the name.
Menu board in black and gold, tall shape
Black with gold is how many gatsby shops paint the board above the counter. Section names stand over a gold rule, and a thin line runs under each gatsby.
Cream card, the Sunday lunch look in red, A4 to print
A cream card with a red frame is the quiet version, for a shop that prints its menu and hands it over the counter. A4 is a normal printer page.
Takeaway sign look in green and yellow, square
Green and yellow is the other pair of colours seen on takeaway windows. On a square the menu turns into two columns, which suits a post.
Takeaway sign look in black and orange, A4 to print
Black and orange is the night version of the same sign. On A4 it prints dark, so use it where your printer has ink to spare or post it as a picture.
Chalkboard, A5 to print
A blackboard at A5, half a printer page, stands on the counter beside the till. Chalk lettering reads like a board written that morning.

A gatsby menu, step by step

The first picture has three sections. Gatsbys has six lines, each with a Half and a Full price, from the chips gatsby up to steak and egg. "Also" holds a bunny chow, a chicken burger with chips and a chip roll, each with one price. Extras has chips, a fried egg and a two-litre cold drink. The line at the foot gives the free drink and the trading days.

Tips

  1. Type Half and Full once, as the names of the two price columns, not in every gatsby name.
  2. Write fillings as your customers order them: "polony and Vienna", "masala steak".
  3. If a gatsby comes in one size only, fill in one price box and leave the other empty.
  4. Keep the free-drink line short enough for the two lines the foot of the menu allows.
  5. A menu in Afrikaans or in both languages works the same way: the picture shows exactly the words you type.

Sizes and printing

Tall, for WhatsApp Status
Tall like a phone screen. Best for WhatsApp Status and for Stories.
Square, for a post
Square. Best for a post on Facebook or Instagram.
Printer page (A4)
A4 is the size of a normal printer page. Print it at home or at a print shop. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
Half page (A5)
A5 is half of a normal printer page. Good for a counter. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.

Questions

Can I show quarter, half and full prices on one line?
No, a line holds two prices. Use Half and Full as the two columns and give the quarters a section of their own, or add each quarter as its own line.
Can I call the sizes Midi and Mega?
Yes. The names of the two price columns are yours to type: Half and Full, Midi and Mega, Medium and Large. They are drawn above the prices exactly as typed.
Where do I put "free cold drink with a full gatsby"?
In the box for where you are and when you are open. It is drawn at the foot of the menu. The form has no separate box for an offer on a menu.
What is a gatsby?
A long roll, cut open and filled with slap chips and a filling such as polony, Russian sausage, chicken or masala steak. It comes from Cape Town and is often bought to share.
Is this a Great Gatsby party menu?
No. This page is for the Cape Town sandwich and the shops that sell it. It has nothing to do with the novel or a themed party.

What you type is kept in this browser on this device until you clear your browser data, so you can come back, change a price and save a new picture. A photo and a logo are optional and are not kept for the next visit.
