What goes on a roadhouse menu
- 1Burgers and toasties side by side
- A roadhouse sells burgers and sandwiches as its main food. Start with burgers, then toasties, then extras and drinks. The menu keeps this order, so a customer coming for a burger reads it first.
- 2Single and double on one line
- Burgers come single or double. Under All options, tick "Two prices on each line, like Small and Large" for the Burgers section. Type Single and Double in the boxes "First price is" and "Second price is".
- 3What is in each toastie
- Put what is in the toastie in brackets after its name, such as "Bacon and egg toastie (streaky bacon, egg, cheddar, sauce)". Keep the brackets short.
- 4Extras in their own section
- Chips, onion rings, bacon strips: give them a section called "Extras" with one price each, so a customer can add them to a burger.
- 5Shakes and hot and cold drinks
- A roadhouse serves milkshakes, cold drinks and hot coffee. Put them in one section. A shake or a cold drink with a burger can have its own line with a single price.
- 6A roadhouse combo
- A burger, chips and a cold drink is one line: type the items in the name and the price after it.
- 7A diner photo
- A burger on a plate, cut to show the fill, in daylight, on a clean background, fills the frame better than a menu of words. Under All options is a box for your photo and your logo.
- 8Breakfast, lunch and dinner on one board
- A roadhouse open all day can run breakfast, lunch and dinner from one board. Start with what sells first in the day, then the rest, and put the hours in the line at the foot.
- 9Sauce choices in brackets
- Sauce choices such as mayo, BBQ or peri-peri can go in the name in brackets: "Chicken burger (peri-peri mayo)". Keep them to two or three words.
- 10Where the menu goes
- Post the tall picture on WhatsApp Status when a new burger goes on. Print the printer page (A4) for the wall above the till and the half page (A5) for each table.
Roadhouse menu design ideas
Six ways one roadhouse menu can look: a black board with yellow tabs, a black board under a lime awning, a red and yellow diner, a cream card in dark green, a navy board under a striped awning and flat black slate with red labels. Tap one to start from it.
- Black with yellow tabs and checks, A4 to print
- Black with yellow tabs and a check border. The Single and Double price columns are in yellow, so the eye lands on the numbers. A4 for the wall above the till.
- Black board under an awning, square
- A black board under a striped awning, with a lime strip along the foot for where you are and when. On a square it posts whole.
- Red with yellow tabs and checks, A5 to print
- Red and yellow with a row of checks, a bright diner look that reads from the road. A5 for each table.
- Cream card in dark green, A5 to print
- A cream card in dark green, the look of an old-style diner sign. A5 for a table holder.
- Navy board under a striped awning, tall shape
- Navy with a striped awning, the look of a food truck board. Tall for WhatsApp Status.
- Flat black with red labels, square
- Flat black with a red label for each section, the plain way many roadhouses post a special. Square for a post.
A roadhouse menu, step by step
The menu has four sections. Burgers has three lines with two prices each, single and double. Toasties has three items with one price each. Extras has three add-on items. Shakes and drinks has four items. The burgers come first because most orders start there, and the line at the foot says the diner is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Tips
- Write "burger and chips" only when chips really come with it; otherwise list chips as an extra.
- Keep burger names to two or three words and let the brackets carry the fillings.
- A photo of a burger cut to show the fill reads better than a list of items.
- When a special ends, take its line off the menu and save a new picture.
- Name the patty and the bun in brackets, so the customer knows the burger they order.
- Write the single and double sizes in the same order on every burger line.
Sizes and printing
- Tall, for WhatsApp Status
- Tall like a phone screen. Best for WhatsApp Status and for Stories.
- Square, for a post
- Square. Best for a post on Facebook or Instagram.
- Printer page (A4)
- A4 is the size of a normal printer page. Print it at home or at a print shop. A home printer leaves a thin white edge.
- Half page (A5)
